Covalent Bonding
- This happens when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. When this happens to non-metal atoms it is called the Kindergarten Bond. Electrons are not sent from one atom to another. They are shared by both atoms. The steps to making covalent bonds are:
1.Write synmbls
2. Fill in valance electrons
3. Find holes
4. Fill in holes
5. Rewrite with bond.
there are two types of covalent bonds. They are polar and nopolar covalent bonds. Nonpolar covalent bonds occur when electrons are equally attracted to the positive nucleus of each atom. They occur when you bond two of the same atoms together. an example of this is 2 hydrogens can form a nonpolar covalent bond because they are two of the same atoms forming Polar covalent bonds occur when the shared electrons are attracted to the nucleus of one atom more than the other. They occur when two different atoms share electrons. Since oxygen is a non-metal I can form a covalent bond. I can form with another oxygen because it will have two open spaces. I can also form with two hydrogens because they each have one space open and they can give me two electrons. I can also form with two lithiums because they each have one space in them and they can give me two.

Bond - Ionic bond
An ion is an atom with extra electrons or missing elctrons, and they form because they want to be happy and have a complete outer energy shell.
ba.JPG

The two types of ions are cations and anions; cations are positve ions and anions are negative ions.

I can form an ion because I am a nonmetal and as long as I form with a metal I can make an ion.

oxygen_ion.JPG

An ionic bond is a bond between a metal and a nonmetal. The steps to making an ionic bond are: write the symbol of the element, write the Lewis structure (dots fo the outer energy level electrons around the symbol), show by he use of arrows the loss or gain of the outer energy level electrons, write as ions, and show how athey are attracted to form an ionic bond.

Bond - Metallic Bond - A metallic bond is a bond that is formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them, and this kind of bond happens between two or more metals. This kind of bond can only happen with metals. It explians why metals: conduct electricity, conduct heat, and are flexible. In a metallic bond the nuclui are lined up, and the electrons jump and they move freely between metal atoms. Since I am a nonmetal, I can not make this bond.

Friends, Please Join Me!
I can form two types of bonds. I can form a covalent bond and an ionic bond. A covalent bond is a bond between two nonmetals and an ionic bond is a bond between a metal and a nonmetal. One covalent bond I can make is with another oxygen, and I can also make this bond with two hydorgens because both of them can give me an electron and I only need two. I can make an ionic bond with Berylium because it is a metal and I can make an ionic bond with calcium too because it is also a metal. Berrylium and calcium can both give me the two electrons I need to be full.
